Artemis Options Society, formally the Victoria Society for Educational Alternatives, was initiated in 1971 in response to a concern over the lack of resources for young women who had left school or who were experiencing difficulty with the traditional school system. At that time, the society established the Girl’s Alternative Program {GAP} to meet the educational and social needs of young women in a smaller, more personal setting. Options was created 10 years later to serve the particular needs of pregnant and parenting adolescents. While the teachers carry on the academic component of the program, youth and family counselors provide counseling, support groups and training around the many issues and decisions affecting the lives of young women. In 1989 Options Daycare was established as an on-site centre for the infants and toddlers of the mothers attending the school. Artemis Place opened in 2005 for non-parenting/pregnant girls to offer another choice and location for lifeskills and education. All of the programs revolve around each young woman’s active participation and involvement in every area of her education.
